Jean is a native of North Carolina. She is married to Ray Childers and they have one son, Neal, who is a lawyer in Buckhead. Jean is a graduate of Blanton’s Business College, Asheville, NC; Georgetown College, Georgetown KY, with a Bachelor of Arts (summa cum laude) degree, majoring in history and Spanish; and a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort worth, TX, with a Master of Religious Education degree, and was a teaching assistant to the head of the children’s division. Jean was awarded the Elizabeth G. Price award for the highest scholastic ranking of a female student in the School of Religious Education. Jean has also done further study at Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and at Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida, for teacher certification.
She has worked as a bookkeeper (Moore General Hospital, Black Mountain, NC) and served as a teacher in schools in North Carolina, Kentucky and Florida for several years. When her husband was Minister of Education at First Baptist Church of Marietta, GA, Jean was founder and first director of the church’s kindergarten program, which is now in its 52nd year. She was also a certified worker for the Training Union Department of the Georgia Baptist Convention and taught in training schools across the state. When they served at the First Baptist Church in Brevard, NC, Jean was financial secretary. Jean and her husband wrote curriculum material for 4s & 5s for the Baptist Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and taught demonstration classes for teachers of 4s & 5s at the Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly for a number of years.
When the family relocated back to Georgia in 1970, she was a housewife for a short period until she became Office Manager of Childers & Shelnutt, Inc., and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1990. Jean came to work at Buckhead as Financial Secretary in January 2001.
