William Givens is the senior pastor at Buckhead Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. His tenure there began as an intern in 2010. A year later he became an associate pastor and in August 2014, he was appointed the 21st senior pastor in the church’s 90-year please confirm history.
William grew up in Dublin, Georgia and is the youngest son of five children. After completing high school at East Laurens High, he joined the National Guard and trained in South Carolina and Virginia.
He later attended Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in religious studies in 2007. He continued his studies at seminary in Atlanta at the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University and received a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Urban Missions in 2011.
Shortly after graduating from college and prior to attending seminary, William worked in a management capacity at UPS where his store was one of the highest producing in the North Georgia region.
William had a couple of powerful, life-changing experiences during college that confirmed his love of Christian ministry and supported his ultimate decision to attend seminary. He studied abroad in Thailand and later traveled to Burma, where he observed extreme physical and spiritual poverty. He also spent 11 months in Iraq where he served a tour of duty as a member of the National Guard. He was chapel pastor during his time there.
During his tenure at Buckhead Baptist Church, William has been very involved with the extraordinary charitable efforts of the Buckhead Christian Ministry. In 2013, he was named the faith-based non-profit’s “Change Maker of the Year” for his ministry to the staff, their clients, and work throughout the Buckhead Community (any specific reason why you were chosen for this recognition?)
William, his wife Gloria and three children Asher (7), Isaac (3) and Jed (10 months) reside in Atlanta, where they have lived for the past eight years.
Outside of his congregation, William enjoys traveling, spending time with his family and playing pick-up basketball.
